CLIENT PORTAL, OPEN SOURCE

The portal is a view of the work,
not another tool to maintain

Standalone portal products need someone to keep them updated. The Worklenz portal reads directly from your project data, so what clients see is always current and nobody spends Friday afternoon syncing it.

Client-facing portal view with project progress
For your clients

Answer "how's it going?" permanently

Each client gets a login showing their projects only: current phase, task progress, and milestones. It reads from the same database your team works in, so the portal is accurate the moment work happens.

  • Live project status per client
  • Milestones and phases in plain language
  • Progress that updates as tasks move
  • No per-client seat charges
  • Runs on your domain when self-hosted
Internal budget dashboard hidden from client portal users
For your team

Transparency for clients, privacy for the team

The portal is a strict one-way window. Internal comments, workload views, budgets, and every other client's existence stay invisible. Your team works candidly; clients see the curated truth.

  • Internal discussions never exposed
  • Other clients' work fully isolated
  • Budgets and hours stay internal
  • You choose what each client sees
  • One workspace serves all portals

We are working with Trello until we have discovered Worklenz. The boards is better than Trello bzz you can view % of tasks completed and also the roadmap is more attractive than others. We are waiting the new features that make possible importer boards and projects from other platforms to migrate and centralize all project's information in one site.

Why self-host the thing
your clients touch

The portal is where client trust is most concrete. Owning that surface has real advantages.

Client data held in a self-hosted database

Your Data, Your Rules

Client names, project details, and progress live in your PostgreSQL database. When a client asks where their data is, the answer is one sentence.

Time tracking connected to the client portal platform

More Than a Portal

The portal comes attached to full project management: boards, time tracking, budgets, and invoicing. You are not buying a window, you are getting the house.

Unlimited client access without per-seat pricing

No Seat Meter

Invite every client on every account. Proprietary portal tools price per user or per client; here the number that matters is zero.

Reporting on a platform with a guaranteed continuity path

Continuity Guaranteed

AGPL-3.0 means the portal your clients rely on cannot be discontinued out from under you. Your deployment runs as long as you want it to.

The platform behind the portal

Resource scheduler

Resource scheduler

Invoice & billing

Invoice & billing

Bill the same work the portal reports on, from the same system.

File management

Deliverables organised on projects, stored on your infrastructure.

Templates

Phases

The milestones clients follow are the phases your team plans with.

Daily digest

Daily digest

Your team gets summaries; clients get the portal. Everyone stays current.

Is there a real open source client portal?

Mostly no, which surprises people. Searching the category turns up proprietary tools marketing against the term (SuiteDash is closed source despite ranking for it), very early projects like Atrium, and guides suggesting you assemble a portal from file-sharing, messaging, and e-signature components. An assembled portal is a second product your team maintains forever.

The practical open source answer is a portal that ships inside a platform. Worklenz includes a client portal as a core feature of its AGPL-3.0 project management platform: the portal is generated from live project data rather than maintained as a separate artifact.

What clients see, and what they never see

A client logging into the Worklenz portal sees their projects: status, tasks, milestones, and progress through phases. They do not see internal comments, time logs, budgets, team workload, or any trace of your other clients. The separation is structural, not a permissions checkbox someone can misconfigure per project.

This matters because portals fail socially before they fail technically. If clients might stumble onto internal candor, teams stop writing candidly in the tool, and the tool dies. A hard wall keeps the internal workspace honest and the client view professional.

Self-hosted or cloud, the portal comes along

Self-hosting puts the portal on your own domain and your own infrastructure: clone the GitHub repository, run the Docker quick-setup, and the full stack including the portal is yours. The Community edition is free with unlimited users and no per-client charges. Cloud hosting offers the identical portal without the server work, free for unlimited users with up to 3 active projects.

Either way, the portal inherits the platform's economics: it is a feature, not a per-seat product. Agencies with fifty clients pay the same as agencies with five.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about the Worklenz client portal

1

Is the Worklenz client portal really open source?

Yes. The portal is part of the Worklenz platform, released under AGPL-3.0 with full source at github.com/Worklenz/worklenz. Self-host it and the portal runs on your infrastructure like every other feature.

2

What can clients do in the portal?

Clients see live status for their projects: tasks, milestones, phases, and overall progress. They can follow delivery without emailing anyone. Internal comments, budgets, time logs, and other clients' data are never visible to them.

3

How many clients can we invite?

There is no limit and no per-client fee, on cloud or self-hosted. Portal access is a platform feature, not a metered add-on.

4

Can we run the portal on our own domain?

Yes, by self-hosting. Deploy Worklenz with Docker behind your own domain and clients log into a portal that is entirely yours: your servers, your database, your TLS certificate.

5

Do we have to use the whole platform to get the portal?

The portal displays Worklenz project data, so it is not a bolt-on for other tools. That coupling is what keeps it accurate: teams that tried standalone portals usually abandoned them because updating became a chore.

6

What does it cost?

The portal is included on all plans, including the free cloud plan (unlimited users, up to 3 active projects) and the free self-hosted Community edition (unlimited users and projects).
